This time of the year we have to start thinking about those good ole’ taxes. I am guessing you are smiling as much as I am about the thought of another tax season. I am thankful however that I am not an auditor or an accountant. Thankfully God has gifted others to do this meaningful work. I don’t know about you, but I don’t totally enjoy even getting all the information together or waiting for my accountant to figure out “the bottom line.
Yet as I consider another tax season I am reminded of Jesus’ words when he was challenged about taxes. Jesus responded (Matthew 22:21) with “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesars and unto God the things that are Gods.” Once again, Jesus was teaching a spiritual point. As Jesus looked at the coin, he noted how important it is for us to give to Caesar (or the government) what belongs to them. More importantly, Jesus was teaching us to give to God what belongs to God.
Once we understand what Jesus was referring to (your whole heart and soul and mind and strength) we then have to ask ourselves – am I giving to God what belongs to God? How would you answer that question? More importantly, how would God answer that question?
